circadian rhythm sleep disorder Flashcards
delayed sleep phase syndrome
condition in which the major sleep episode is delayed in relation to the desired sleep time or what is considered a conventional time.
DSPS symptoms
Sleep-onset insomnia [difficulty falling asleep]
Difficulty awakening at the desired or necessary time
Excessive sleepiness.
circadian rhythm sleep disorders
are a group of sleep disorders involving sleep disturbance that is primarily due to a mismatch between an individual’s sleep–wake pattern and the pattern that is desired or required.
advanced phase sleep disorder
characterised by advance of the major sleep episode to an earlier time compared to desired or conventional sleep times.
APSD symptoms
compelling evening sleepiness, early sleep onset, and awakening earlier than desired times.
more common in older individuals
caused by deterioration of bio clock
shift work disorder
occurs as a result of work shifts being regularly scheduled during the usual sleep period.
shift work disorder symptoms
insomnia when a person is trying to go to sleep
excessive sleepiness when a person needs to be awake and alert
reduction in total sleep time
Longer periods on a particular shift allow for better adjustment.
bright light therapy
involves timed exposure of the eyes to intense but safe amounts of light.
The aim is to shift an individual’s sleep–wake cycle to a desired schedule, typically the day–night cycle of their physical environment.
The light may be sunlight or artificial.
BLT + delayed sleep phase syndrome
Light exposure in the early morning hours to advance the circadian rhythm.
Helps shift sleep onset and waking time to an earlier schedule.
BLT + advanced sleep phase disorder
Light exposure in the evening to delay the circadian rhythm.
Shifts sleep onset and waking time to a later schedule.
BLT + sleep work shift disorder
Light treatment in the evening to assist night shift workers.
Avoiding daylight after the shift and wearing special goggles may be helpful.
