classified by disturbances in mood or emotions, states of extreme happiness or sadness occur and mood can alternate without cause

- slower mental and physical activity, poor self esteem
- immobilized from everyday activities; sadness, hopelessness, helplessness
- desire to withdraw; delusions in severe cases

- impulses immediately expressed
- unrealistic activity
- elation and self- confidence
- disorganized thoughts and speech
- patient aggression
dissociative disorders
develop when a person unconsciously dissociates one part of the mind from the rest
- multiple personality
- psychogenic amnesia
multiple personality
includes 2 or more independent personalities
- each personality may or may not know about the other
- causative factors are not understood; believed to allow a person to engage in behaviors that are against the patients morality and normally produce a guilt
psychogenic amnesia
- produced by the mind with no physical cause
- forgets all aspects of the past
neuroses disorders
characterized by individuals exhibiting fear and maladaptive strategies in dealing with stressful or everyday stimuli.
- no psychosis, delusions and usually realize they have a problem
- anxiety, OCD, phobia
personality disorders
classified by observing a patients pattern of behavior, dysfunctional view of society and level of sadness
- antisocial behavior
- borderline behavior
- narcissistic behavior
- psychopathic personality
schizophrenia disorders
psychotic in nature and present with disorganization of thought, hallucinations, emotional dysfunction, anxiety and perceptual impairments
somatoform disorders
conversion disorder
hypochondria disorder
somatization disorder
conversion disorder
physical complaints of neurological basis with no underlying cause
