healing by intention Flashcards
1
Q
primary intention
A
most commonly acute wounds with minimal tissue loss
- smooth clean edges are re-approximated and closed with sutures, staples, or adhesions
- surgical incision, laceration, puncture, superficial and partial thickness woulds (abrasions, blisters)
2
Q
secondary intention
A
permits wounds to close on their own without superficial closure
- significant tissue loss or necrosis, irregular or no nonviable wound margins that cannot be reapproximated, infection of debris, contamination
- often associated with pathology diabetes, ischemic conditions, pressure damage or inflammatory disease
- require ongoing wound care and scar formation
3
Q
tertiary intention
A
delayed primary intention healing
- wounds at risk for developing complications such as sepsis or dishiseance may be temporarily left open.
- once risk factors have been alleviated, (ie.) wounds with significant edema, contamination from debris, at high risk for infection or with questionable vascular integrity, then the wound is healed via primary intention
