Protozoa Flashcards
Kinetoplast
Disc shaped mass of mitochondrial DNA located next to the kinetosome at the base of the flagella
Ammonotelic
Excrete nitrogen in ammonia
Most diffuses through the cell membrane
Merogony
Asexual reproduction (results in multiple daughter cells)
Schizogony
Nucleus replicates multiple times before actually splitting the cell (cytokinesis)
Gametogony
Formation of gametes (sexual phase)
Sporogony
Formation and maturation of infective stage
Definitive Host
One on which the parasite reaches sexual maturity
Intermediate Host
One that is required for parasite development but one in which the parasite does not reach sexual maturity
Schizont
Cell undergoing schizogony
Merozoite
Produced by schizogony and capable of starting a new sexual or asexual cycle of development
Karyomastigont
Characteristic of certain protozoa in which the mastigont system is associated with the nucleus
Isogametes
A gamete indistinguishable in form, size, or behaviour from another gamete with which it can unite to form a zygote
Anisogametes
A gamete differing in size or structure from the one with which it unites
Trophozoite
A growing stage in the life cycle of some sporozoan parasites, when they are absorbing nutrients from the host
Syngamy
The fusion of two cells, or of their nuclei, in reproduction
6 basic morphological forms of trypanosomes
- Amastigote (spheroid, short flagella projecting just above the flagellar pocket, definitive form for Leishmania in host)
- Choanomastigote (flagella emerges from collar, KS and KP anterior to nucleus)
- Promastigote (flagella extends forward, KS and KP anterior to nucleus)
- Opisthomastigote (KP and KS found POSTERIOR to nucleus, long flagellar pocket, no undulating membrane)
- Epimastogote (KP and KS anterior, short undulating membrane along basal or proximal part of flagellum)
- Trypomastigote (KP and KS near posterior, flagella runs along surface of body (undulating membrane) and continues as a whip anterior to the body)
Cytostome
Cell mouth
Part of a cell specialized for phagocytosis, usually in the form of a microtubule-supported funnel or groove
Food is directed into the cytostome and sealed into vacuoles
