Distinctive features of Hemiptera
Triangle shape on back
Basal portion of front wing is thickened and leathery, apical portion is membranous
2 species of bed bugs
- Cimex lectularis (human bed bug in cities)
- Cimex hemipterus (tropical bed bug)
DO NOT transmit any disease!
Suborder Reduviidae
Includes true bugs (Triatoma, Panstrongylus and Rhodnius are assassin bugs that transmit Chaga’s)
Uses proboscis to inject saliva that liquified the insides, and then sucks them out

Fleas! Complete metamorphosis, drink blood, species specific, transmit disease (bubonic plague, endemic typhus, tularemia)

Attaches to birds and forms ulvers on head and neck
Can attack many other animals
Have been found infected with plague and rickettsia, but its only minor transmission since females are permanently fastened to host
