Nematoda Flashcards
General structure of Nematoda
Bilaterally symmetrical
Elongated and tapered at both ends
Posses pseudocoel (body cavity derived from embryonic blastocoel)
Has both a mouth and anus
Lumen of pharynx is triradiate (3 lips)
Body is covered with non cellular cuticle that is secreted by an underlying hypodermis
4 stages of development
1 opening for digestive and excretory system
No cilia or flagella (even in male gamete)
Females are larger
Most are oviparous, some ovoviviparous
Ovoviviparous
Supposed to lay an egg (would be just oviparous), but the eggs hatch in the body of the female so they give birth to live offspring
Dioctophyme renale
Giant kidney worm
Females larger than males
Lacks host specificity
Live in the kidney of the vertebrate host, eggs are passed in urine
Only infect one kidney (it stops working) and the other gets much smaller
Trichinella spiralis
Can be found in many species of carnivores and omnivores - animals infected when they ingest infective larvae in raw or undercooked meat
Develop in working muscles
Ascaris lumbricoides Diagnosis and treatment
Treated with drugs called ascaricides
Identify the appearance of worm or eggs in feces
Treat with Mebendazole (bind to tubulin in worms’ intestinal cells and body wall muscles)
Also can use Nitazoxanide and ivermectin
