Protists (E1) Flashcards
Protists
a mostly unicellular group of eukaryotes, anything that isn’t a plant, animal, or fungi
- Photoautotrophs, heterotrophs, mixotrophs, sexual/asexual
Endosymbiosis
a relationship between two species where one lives inside the cell or cells of another
- Alpha proteobacterium gave rise to mitochondria (only once over evolution’s course)
Diplomonads (protists)
have reduced mitochondria called mitosomes, parasites
- Lack of functional electron transport chains, cannot use oxygen
ex. Giardia (causes diarrhea)
Kinetoplastid (protist)
have one, large mitochondrion holding a mass of DNA (kinetoplast)
- Can evade detection in the immune system by switching the surface coating protein from generation to generation, preventing the host from forming immunity
- Trypanosoma (sleeping sickness)
Apicomplexan
parasites, spread through sporozoites (infectious cells), sexual/asexual
Ex. Plasmodium (malaria)
Bite > sporozoites > merozoites > gametocytes > zygotes
Ciliates
covered in cilia that move rhythmically, used to move and feed
Rhizarian / Tubulinids
amoebas (move and feed by pseudopodia)
