Evolution (E1) Flashcards
Divergent Evolution
evolution that occurs when a population is split into two groups by a geographic barrier (Wolf evolves into Fox or Dog)
Coevolution
the evolution of closely related species (predators and prey evolve with one another)
Parallel Evolution
independent species acquire similar characteristics while evolving together in the same ecospace (animals evolve similarly from a common ancestor)
Convergent Evolution
evolution that occurs when species that occupy similar ecological areas adapt in similar ways (flying squirrel North America sugar glider Australia)
Evolution
offspring with genetic modification
Microevolution
changes over time in allele frequencies in a population
Macroevolution
broad pattern of evolution above the species level
Natural selection
the process where individuals that have certain inherited traits tend to survive and reproduce more than individuals without that trait
