Why did Cromwell want to find Henry Protestant allies?
There was already a catholic alliance installed in defence of the pope and Rome b c Suleiman the Magnificent leader of the ottoman turks had taken over most of eastern Mediterranean and were threatening SE Europe.
In north Germany many of the princes had turn to Lutheranism in part of preserving their semi-independence from the Habsburg emeperor Charles v, so formed the schmalkaldic league in 1531 and were looking for Protestant allies. Led to the arranged marriage between the king and Anne, violent dislike towards her, miscalculation.
Truce of nice 1538- peace between France and Spain, no longer at war so there was a crippling sense of an invasion of Englandby an alliance of the two catholic nations, may have influenced Henry in insisting on the publication of the 6 articles in 1539 in an effort to appease the pope and catholic countries.
Why was this a failed miscalculation?
War between Habsburg and Valois was restarting, Protestant alliance was not so necessary
