The backdrop: Lincolnshire 1536
Rumours that the motivations for the dissolution of monasteries were after gold plates, jewels and extra taxes. People began to demand cromwell’s dismissal and hatred of Statute of Uses.Rebels led by a local shoemaker called Nicholas melton.
Rebellion was short-lived= bishop of Lincoln was burdened and the commons collapsed in confusion as Suffolk’s army drew near
What happened during the pilgrimage of grace?
Led by a Yorkshire lawyer called Thomas aske. He dispatched letters across the country calling men to maintain the holy church. Declared the rebellion as a pilgrimage and he chose the banner of the Five Wounds of Christ as its standard. 30,000 rebels marched on York and swore a religious oath that contradicted the royal supremacy and sang the ballads in favour of the monasteries.
King’s demands for taxes was a consistent theme in the rebel’s articles such as
Tudor subsidy act of 1534 and statute of uses which was a tax on aristocratic landed inheritance

Aske believed northfolk when he would grant a general pardon, a prolonged truce n the promise of a parliament held by free elections in York.
Further revolts in the Westmorland and Cumberland in 1537 led by Francis bigod gave Henry the excuse he needed to carry out reprisals nd renegade on earlier promises. Martial law was declared at Carlisle and gentry and nobility were rounded and executed.
