Resistance within the clergy- john fisher

A

Bishop of Rochester since 1504.
Religiously zealous and believed that h’s actions against Catherine of Aragon were totally wrong. He said so to Henry’s face.
Refused to swear the oath accepting the divorce.
Pope declared that f was to be made a cardinal, Henry acted quickly and was accused of high treason and executed.
Henry’s action gained support for f’s cause and provided evidence for accusations that Henry acted as a tyrant

Elizabeth Barton-the nun of Kent

A

Subject to visions since her teens, following a cure by a vision of the Virgin Mary.
By 1528, her visions had begun to focus on the king’s marriage and she had warned of disastrous consequences if he abandoned his wife- told Henry that he would be dead within a month if he divorced cath.
By 1530, Bocking had developed Elizabeth’s warnings and encouraged pilgrims and publishing books describing her visions.
Arrested in 1533 ad confessed that her visions were false and executed in 1534.
Group condemned by an act of attainders.
Failed but their attempts to co-ordinate a resistance movement represented a genuine threat that no govt could afford to ignore.

Monastic resistance

A

Widely respected London monks of the Carthusian order, who had remained closer to the strict ideals of monasticism.
1532-33 they refused to accept the divorce.
1534- resisted gov pressure to agree to a declaration against the authority of the pope
Treason act, forced the Carthusians to submit, arresting the most reluctant and executing eighteen of them.
