Q

What was the problem of the plan attack on Paris with habs and eng?

A

They both unilaterally followed their own priorities, each blaming the other for not sticking to the attack on Paris bc Henry wanted to win glory for himself on his terms— captured Boulogne— very expensive to fortify.

Q

What was the treaty of ardres?

A

1546– after french failed attack to to capture the Isle of Wight, it was agreed that if the french paid all the pension money outstanding, boulogne would be returned to the french in 1554. Henry was confident this was unlikely but the war against France had cost 2 mil -debasement of the coinage and sell of monastic land. His expensive war left a legacy of increased inflation and debt for his children’s reigns.

Q

In Henry’s defence, what can be argued that he achieved more (even if not much) than either Francis or Charles over their long reigns?

A

He did achieve victories over boulogne and with the treaty of ardres. Judging him by the standards of the day, his priority was the acquisition of glory which was an essential part of the assumptions about kingship and competency in this period. Through victory abroad, he enhanced the reputation of Tudor rule— even if undesirable consequences were the result.
