Why did Henry have problems with Ireland regarding his father’s reign?
The Fitzgeralds— leading Irish family— supported simnel and warbeck.
In 1536, Fitzgerald led a rebellion against the English crown bc Henry had become head of church and had therefore displaced the pope and fitz announced his support for the pope and emperor Charles v.
How was the rebellion put down?
Brutally put down and a more solid basis of gov established to deter future rebellions and to prevent the country being used as a base for future enemies in England. The fitz lost their power as lord-deputies.
How did Henry go further with Ireland?
Anthony st leger was sent as its first English governor. All lands in Ireland had to be surrendered to the crown and loyalty to Henry. In return, some Irish lords were to be included in the parl in London.
But the new governor only controlled a small part of the island around Dublin.
Led to principles of English common law to establish royal authority across all of Ireland. The breaking down of feudal territories proved to be slow and was to take until the early 17th century to complete. Known as the policy of plantations.
Why did Henry’s reign mark an important step in Irish history?
Ireland was being moved from a clan-based Gaelic structure to a more centralised monarchical state, making it more typical of the rest of Europe. But, the Irish remained faithful to the pope and catholic faith at the same time as the plantation settlers were Protestant in belief.
