Proteins: Structure And Function Flashcards
proteins
A macromolecule made of long chains of amino acids
How do nucleic acids store and transmit genetic info
By making proteins
Amino acids
Monomers that compose polypeptides
Polypeptide
Many amino acids bonded together
Peptide bond
The bond that joins 2 amino acids together
Structural proteins
Make up parts of the cell and body Ex.hair,Muscle,collagen.
Regulatory proteins
Controls the transportation of genes (how DNA copies its self)
Antibodies
Inactive bacteria, toxins, and viruses to protect the body
Hormones
Regulate the growth and development of animals Ex.insulin, human Growth hormone.
Enzymes
Speed up chemical reactions in the body. Ex. RNA polymerase,Helicase.
Transport proteins
Move substances in the blood and across cell membranes.ex hemoglobin, carrier proteins.
Why are proteins important?proteins:
1.Make up many of the structures of an organism.2.control chemical reactions.3.Regulates cell activities.
