DNA Replication Flashcards
For each new cell to have the right amount of DNA before cell divides
DNA must replicate itself
Process by which 2 identical copies of DNA are made. Occurs during Interphase
DNA replication
The enzyme helicase unwinds the DNA. This starts at a fixed point
Step 1 of the DNA replication process
DNA nucleotides bond to complimentary bases on each side of the DNA
Step 2 of DNA replication process
DNA polymerase joins the nucleotides in a 5’ to 3’ direction on each strand
Step 3 of the DNA replication process
DNA polymerase proofread a the bases and fixes any mistakes
Step 4 of the DNA replication process
Purpose of DNA (what happens when DNA replication is complete)
You have 2 identical copies of DNA
