proteins Flashcards
what makes up proteins?
20 different amino acids
what is the group that varies called?
R group
draw an amino acid labelled
..
what is a zwitteron?
when an amino acid is at PH7 - has a negative and positive charge
what is it called when 2 amino acids join? how do they form?
di-peptide
condensation reaction - releases water
how could you test for proteins?
add sodium hydroxide to your sample, add copper sulphate and mix positive - purple / pink
negative - blue
define a primary structure
sequence of amino acids in a polypeptide chain
define a secondary structure
folding of primary structure alpha and beta held by weak hydrogen bonds
define a tertiary structure
highly folded secondary structure strong hydrogen ionic and disulphide bonds
define a quaternary structure
two or more polypeptide chains joined eg insulin
