lipids Flashcards
what is a macromolecule?
large molecules made form smaller ones
what is a monomer?
a single molecule
what is a dimer?
2 of the same molecules linked together
what is a polymer?
many of the same molecules linked together
what is an inorganic molecule?
molecule or ion with no more than 1 carbon atom
what are some examples of i organic molecules?
magnesium - needed for mammals for bone structure
iron- vital in haemoglobin formation
calcium - component of cell walls
phosphate- vital for DNA
what is an organic molecule?
molecule containing at least 1 carbon atom bonded to another
what happens if the carbon has only bonded with one other carbon?
it is known as saturated
what happens if there are double or triple carbon bonds
known as unsaturated
what do lipids contain?
carbon hydrogen and nitrogen and sometimes phosphorus
what are the two types of lipids?
triglycerides and phospholipids
what do triglyceridesform? and what are they made up of ?
energy stores in animals and plants
1 molecule of glycerol and 3 molecules of fatty acids
what bonds are in triglycerides?
3 ester bonds form between the fatty acids and glycerol
what do triglycerides properties depend on?
length of chain and degree of saturation
what is the difference in structure from triglycerides to phospholipids?
one fatty acid is replaced with a phosphate group
