Protein Synthesis Flashcards
Where does transcription happen?
In the nucleus
Where does translation happen?
Ribosomes/rough ER
How does STOP prevent more amino acids joining on?
Doesn’t carry any amino acids so the chain can’t continue
Stage 1
Separate
DNA strands separate in the nucleus
Stage 2
Pair, RNA nucleotides
Exposed DNA bases from one of the strands pair with bases from RNA nucleotides
Stage 3
RNA polymerase, Phosphodiester
RNA polymerase joins RNA nucleotides together with Phosphodiester bonds
Stage 4
Gene
Transcription continues until the end of a gene.
Stage 5
Splicing
Introns are spliced out of the mRNA
Stage 6
Pores
mRNA molecules leave the nucleus through the nuclear pores
Stage 7
Ribosomes
mRNA molecules join to ribosomes
Stage 8
tRNA
tRNA molecules carry specific amino acids to the ribosomes
Stage 9 (Codons)
Codons on mRNA pair with complementary anti codons on tRNA
Stage 10
Peptide bonds
Adjacent amino acids are joined by peptide bonds
Stage 11
Folding
The protein produced then folds into the correct shape
