Cytoskeleton Flashcards
What are the 4 things the cytoskeleton aids?
Cell shape
Cell movement
Organelle movement
Cell division
Cell shape
For cells without cell walls, the cytoskeleton determines the shape of the cell. Intermediate filaments are responsible for this.
Cell movement
Microfilaments and microtubules are always assembling and disassembling which results in forces that move the cell.
Cell division
Microtubules accomplish the separation of the chromosomes.
A ring of microfilaments in animal cells constrict central region of cell to help divide the two developing cells.
Organelle movement
Microtubules and microfilaments move the organelles. For example, they move vesicles into the cell after it has engulfed a particle outside the cell.
Describe the structure of the cytoskeleton
A series of protein threads made up of microfilaments, microtubules and intermediate fibres.
