Protein Synthesis Flashcards
What is polyadenylation?
Adding a poly a tail to the 3’ end
What is the cap made of
7 methyl guanylate at 5’ end
What does snrnp stand for?
Small nuclear ribonucleoprotein
What does a spliceosome do?
Bend intron areas towards each other
What joins the intron areas?
Ligase
What does peptidyl transferase do?
Catalyzes the formation of the peptide bonds. Also adds water to stop when reached a stop codon
What do chaperon proteins do?
Help form polypeptide chains into their secondary tertiary and sometimes quarternary structure
What did garrod do?
Made the connection between genes and proteins after seeing his patients packed a needed enzyme resulting in inborn errors of metabolism.
What did beadle and tatum do?
Studied orange bread mold proving each specific gene sequence produced an enzyme. One gene one protein theory.
What does RNA polymerase do?
Places RNA nucleotides at the promoter site of the lagging strand 3’-5’ to the terminator region.
How long can mRNA be?
6000-20000 nucleotides long.
How long is the poly a tail in mammals?
250 adenozene mono phosphates long.
What are prokaryotic ribosomes made of?
3 RNA nucleotides and 55 proteins
