Gene Control Mechanisms Flashcards
Operon
A cluster of genes under the control of one promoter and one operator site
Lac Operon
A gene cluster that codes for enzymes. Involved in the metabolism of lactose. First cluster found.
Promoter
Starting point of a gene.
Terminator
End point of the gene sequence.
Operator (Lac O)
Controls expression of the operons mRNA because it can be impacted by other molecules.
Lac I
Codes for an allosteric repressor protein.
Lac Z
Codes for a protein called B-Galactosidase which breaks lactose into glucose and galactose.
Lac Y
Codes for B-Galactosidase permease protein which integrates into the cell membrane to increase lactose diffusion into the cell.
Lac A
Codes for Thiogalactosidase transacetylase which has no known function.
Housekeeping Genes
Genes transcribes into mRNA to produce proteins that are required ALL the time.
