Human Brain Flashcards
What percent of oxygen does the bran use?
25%
What are the 3 main regions of the brain?
The forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain.
What parts do the Forebrain consist of?
Cerebrum, limbic system, thalamus, hypothalamus.
What parts do the midbrain consist of?
Reticular formation, substantia nigra, ventral tegmental area.
What parts do the hindbrain consist of?
Medulla oblongata, pons and cerebellum.
What are the three meninges called in order from skull to brain?
Dura mater, Arachnoid mater, Pia mater.
What does cerebrospinal fluid do?
Acts as a substitute for blood, shock absorber and transport medium for nutrients.
What is the corpus callosum?
connects the left and right hemispheres of the brain so info can be shared.
What is the central fissure?
The fissure that divides the brain into two hemispheres.
What does the frontal lobe do?
controls voluntary muscles, personality and intellectual ability.
What does the parietal lobe do?
controls touch, temp awareness and is linked to emotions, orientation and understanding speech.
What does the temporal lobe do?
interprets sensory info and is linked to memory.
What does the occipital lobe do?
vision reception and interpretation.
What does the limbic system do?
receives input from the associative areas in the cerebral cortex and nucleus accumbens.
What does the hippocampus do?
stores long tem memories
What does the amygdala do?
center of emotions
What does the thalamus do?
monitors and sometimes modifies incoming sensory info
What does the hypothalamus do?
regulates body temp, breathing, hunger and thirst
What does the reticular formation do?
passes info from higher brain centers to the motor neurons to carry out action.
What does the substantia nigra?
smoothens body movements
What does the Ventral Tegmental Area do?
releases dopamine
What does the cerebellum do?
controls muscular coordination
What does the pons do?
control some respiratory functions. Is a relay station
What does the medulla oblongata do?
controls involuntary primitive responses
