Dysentery; Flask-shaped ulcers in cecum and ascending colon
What is the pathogenesis of Entamoeba histolytica?
Invades cryps, burrows into lamina propia, flask shaped ulcers, may penetrate circulation, liver abscesses
How is Entamoeba histolytica treated?
If asymptomatic use lodoquinol. If systemic use lodoquinol and metronidazole
What are the presenting symptoms of Giardia? Morphology?
Borborygmi, flatulence, belching.
Pear shape with two nuclei bound to brush border.
How is Giardia diagnosed? Treatment?
Cysts in stool; Tinadazole or Metronidazole
What is the symptom of Cryptosporidia?
mild diarrhea and biliarty tract disease
Discuss the pathogenesis of Cryptosporidia
Sporozites attach to brush border, engulfed, causes sodium malabsorption, chloride secretion
What is the symptom of Cyclosporidia?
More severe diarrhea than Crypto
How is Cyclosporidia diagnosed? Treated?
Stool culture; Bactrim.
Cipro if there’s a sulfa allergy.
What is the presenting symptom of Clonorchiasis? Typical patient?
Cholangitis, cholangiocarcinoma; SE asian immigrant
