Enlarged, soft spleen with pale red pulp, Necrotic parenchyma with macrophages. Produces H2S.

A

First Watery/Bloody diarrhea, then Bacteremia w/ flu-like symptoms. Rose spots on chest/abd
May colonize gb; Sickle cell pts are susceptible to Osteomyelitis.

Discuss the pathogenesis of Salmonella

A

Endocytosed via M-cell, moves into submucosa, Ingested by M0 in lamina propria, Proliferate in vacuoles, Carried to lymphatics, spleen and liver, LPS in bloodstream causes inflammatory response.

Pharyngitis, arthralgia, Erythema nodosum, Fever, cramps.

Hemolytic anemia and Hemochromatosis pts at great risk. Sterile arthritis, Reiter syndrome and glomerulonephritis

A

Invade M-cells, Iron uptake system that mediates iron capture and transport is involved. Iron enhances virulence, and stimulates systemic dissemination.

Exudative plaques, distended crypts with mucopurulent exduate that ‘erupts’ to the surface.
Gram POSITIVE, strict anaerobe, can’t reduce sulfate to sulfite, makes endospores
