How are dentures manually cleaned?
A
- soap and soft bristle brush
- microwave for 20s (PMMA dentures)
- ultrasonic

What are the different types of denture cleaner?
A
- alkaline peroxides
- alkaline hypochlorites
- acids

- abrasive cleaners

Describe dentural.
A
- alkaline hypochlorite
- superior cleaning properties, removal of plaque, stain removal, anti-bac and fungicidal
- can leave taste, bleach dentures
- CoCr dentures must not be left for >10 mins or will corrode

Describe steradent.
A
- alkaline peroxide (effervescent)
- rapid action, oxygen bubbles provide mechanical clean
- can bleach denture

What is involved in daily care of dentures?
A
- brush dentures with soft toothbrush (no toothpaste)
- rinse dentures after meal
- soak dentures in cleaner following MI
- rinse with water after cleaner
- soak in cold water overnight

What should you discuss when delivering a completed denture?
A
- discomfort
- insertion and removal
- wear and care instructions

Insertion and removal at delivery
A
- insert lower before upper
- demonstrate using a mirror
- ensure either patient or carer can easily insert and remove

Wear instructions at delivery
A
- manage expectations (may take a few appointments to be completely happy)
- perseverance
- some discomfort is usual, like new shoes
- speech may lisp
- excess salivation to begin with
- eating may be difficult (food under denture, slow, bite cheeks)
- wear as much as possible
- may get comments on appearance
- take out at night
- if there is a problem, wear the denture the day before the appointment so that any areas that rub etc are visible
- given written instructions
