Definition of Prosthodontics.
This is a branch of dentistry that is concerned with the functional and aesthetic rehabilitation of missing teeth by artificial replacement of those teeth and adjacent tissues.
Types of prosthodontics.
Fixed and Removable.
Examples of fixed prostho.
Crown, bridge, implants.
Examples of removable prostho.
Dentures (full and partial.)
Construction of a denture.
1) assessment and tx plan. 2) primary impressions. 3) secondary impressions. 4) metal framework trying (cobalt chrome dentures). 5) jaw relationship 6) denture trial 7) denture fit 8) denture fit check.
1) Assessment and tx plan.
Full exam, Medical hx, reason for dentures, tx plan.
2) Primary impressions.
Made from alginate, used to create study models.
3) Secondary impressions.
Made from PVC or imprigum on custom trays, impressions made for increased accuracy and better fit for denture.
4) metal framework trial.
This is only done for cobalt chrome dentures. This allows the denture framework to be constructed with better retention and more comfort.
5) Jaw relationship.
A wax denture model is made. Any changes can be made in relation to fit, height, shape and colour of teeth at this stage.
6) Denture try-in stage.
The patient places the denture into their mouth and feels the comfort and overall fit of the denture.
7) Denture fit.
Patient is given the final prosthesis. Care instructions and OHI are given to the patient.
8) Denture fit check.
The patient comes a week later for a follow-up appointment. Here the patient can relay if there have been any problems or concerns with the denture.
Post-op instructions for dentures.
Take out before bed, use soft bristle brush to clean, use denture cleaning solution to keep it overnight (sterident), wash over a sink full of water, rinse inbetween meals.
What will happen if dentures aren’t taken care of correctly?
Periodontis, gingivitis, denture stomotitis, candida albicans, ulceration.
