Definition of Local Anaesthesia.
It is the loss of pain sensation in a specific area due to the administration of a drug that blocks nerve conduction.
Definition of Conscious Sedation.
The use of drugs to produce a state of depression of the central nervous system which enables the tx to be carried out without the patient being fully asleep.
Advantages of LA.
Effective, no fasting required, predicable working time, reversible, fast-acting.
Types of sedation.
Oral, Intra-Venous, Inhalation.
Pre-Sedation Instructions.
- No eating 2 hours before tx.
- Take the usual medication as usual.
- Remove any nail varnish or false nails.
- No jewelry.
- No alcohol 24 before treatment.
Post-Op Instructions for sedation.
- An escort is needed
- No internet buying during the 24 hours.
- No alcohol, no smoking.
- Don’t sign any legal documents.
What must be taken before sedation?
Medical/dental/social hx, escort number, baseline vital signs, consent.
What is the reversal drug for midazolam?
Flumazeline.
Advantages of Nitrous Oxide.
Reduced anxiety/pain/movement/gagging.
Increased comfort/time for tx.
No needles included.
Disadvantages of Nitrous Oxide.
Cost of equipment. Pollution. Not potent enough. Set-up Equipment take a lot of space.
What are the contraindications of Nitrous Oxide?
Pregnancy, Respiratory diseases, emotional disorders.
What is needed for IV sedation?
Tourniquet. Tegaderm, kidney dish, 2 syringes, needle, alcohol swab, plaster, drug, cotton roll, cannula, sterile saline, sterile water.
