- cleft palate patients (serve as obturator)
- maintain function and Tonus of masticatory muscles, tongue position and airway development
- prevents habits such as bruxing or tongue thrusting

Contra indications
A
- lack of suitable teeth to support prosthesis
- rampant caries or severe periodontal conditions threatening remaining teeth
- lack of patient acceptance due to aesthetic reasons
- poor OH

A
- Select tray
- Conditioning (take Mx tray home)
- Impression
- silicon based is expensive
- fast setting alginate stiff mix
- Md impression then Mx
- not early in the morning or after a meal
