What is GA?

A

Medically controlled state of unconsciousness with loss of protective reflexes. Patients can’t feel pain, maintain ventilation and require assistance to breathe

Contra indications

A
  • GA risk
  • a healthy cooperative child
  • minimal dental needs
  • infection
  • active systemic disease
  • child who didn’t fast

Indications

A
  • patients with medical condition that makes if a risk to treat in chair
  • too young
  • multiple XLAs
  • mental or sensory problems
  • special needs patients
  • trauma
  • history of failed LA or sedation

UWC PROTOCOL

A
  1. 2x fluoride applications before GA
  2. Bottle usage must stop
  3. Oral hygiene must improve
  4. Diet analysis must be returned by patient
  • Medical history must be confirmed by add and consult arranged with anesthetist
  • Permanent staff member must sign off GA
  • Recall one week post op
