Why is he so important?

A
  • He was the last prophet who is a role model for Muslims
  • He performed no miracles and is the perfect example of a human being
  • At the age of six he became an orphan
  • Through him the Qur’an was revealed over 23 years
  • There can be no more prophets after him

Life in Makkah

A
  • He felt troubled by the corruption and cruelty he saw
  • The angel Jibril appeared before him and ordered him to recite the words that appeared before him
  • This is happened when he was praying in a cave near Makkah
  • This day was called Laylat-ul-Qadr (the night of power), it is celebrated on the 27th day of Ramadan

The revelation of the Qur’an

  • After Laylat-ul-Qadr the Qur’an was revealed to the prophet over the next 23 years
  • He did not always meet the angel but he heard a voice talking to him
  • His message revolved around the ideas of:
    • there is only one true God
    • we need to show thanks to God through worship
    • there will be a judgement day

Opposition in Makkah

A
  • Muhammad gained many followers in Makkah
  • He began preaching openly that the worship of idols was disrespectful to God and that these idols were nothing more that pieces of wood and stone
  • He passed the message that God is merciful

The Hijrah - It is the journey to Yathrib

A
  • He was approached by some pilgrims and they were impressed by him so asked him to come to their city - Yathrib
  • Ali insisted on staying behind as a decoy while Muhammad made his journey
  • He became the city’s ruler
  • He told them to pray towards Makkah and not Jerusalem

His Return to Makkah

A
  • His followers were able to return to Makkah with an army of 10,000 men
  • In 630CE Islam was established as a permanent religion
  • Prophet Muhammad was now established as the final Prophet and true prophet of God
