Proper medical handwashing Flashcards

Q

What is an important state exam tip about proper handwashing?

A

That it is the first thing you’ll be tested on and it isn’t prompted. This means the proctor will not tell you to wash your hands in the beginning and it is not written in your skills test card. If you fail it, you fail the entirety of the skills exam automatically.

A

Narrating every step you take in proper and explicit detail. Try to smile and be likable and friendly during each skill. Be very attentive and careful. Think things through with each skill. Q

What are the steps for best handwashing practice?

A
  1. Turn the water on to a comfortable temperature, take your time with this. Especially in winter. 2. Wet your hands and wrists. 3. Put soap or skin cleanser on your hands and rub them to create lather. Make sure to cause friction because it is the friction that removes germs. 4. Remember to not touch anything except your hands during hand washing. Esp your sleeves or the faucet/faucet handles. Don’t shake your hands, keep your hands downward while lathering. 5. Lather your hands and wrists for 20 seconds using friction. This includes:
    * your palms *the back of your hands *your thumbs *between your fingers *each wrist and two inches above each *under your nails by scratching them across opposite palms. You must continue to narrate everything during the entire skill, esp when lathering.
  2. Point your hands down and rinse each hand, one at a time, starting slightly above the wrist. Let the water run down each hand to your fingertips.
