What do you need to do before you begin the range of motion (ROM) skill?

A
  1. State the common care practice script
  2. Wash your hands (you can state 20 seconds with friction?)
  3. Put on gloves (always follow proper glove protocol)
  4. Ensure the client has proper body alignment and check their position.
  5. Ask the client if you can remove the covers to expose the body limb you are going to perform ROM on. TIP Keep the rest of the client covered and warm

What are the steps for the shoulder ROM exercises?

A
  1. Ask the consumer if you may start with the shoulder exercises
  2. Support the client’s elbow and wrist, straighten the arm, and bring it from a flat position on the bed to straight above the head, as shown below in the corresponding illustration
  3. Repeat twice more
  4. Ask the client if you may continue with more shoulder exercises.
  5. Straighten the client’s arm from the side of their body to above their shoulder, as illustrated below. IMP Always move the joint gently and slowly. Do not move further than the point of resistance.
  6. Repeat steps 3 and 4.

What are the next steps for new shoulder exercise?

A
  1. Place the client’s flexed elbow at shoulder level and rotate the forear, down toward the hip, as shown below IMP Always move the joint gently and slowly. Do not move further than the point of resistance.
  2. Repeat twice more
  3. Cover the client’s shoulder and arm again.

What are the steps for the knee ROM exercises?

A
  1. Ask the client if you can began the exercise
  2. Support the client’s knee and ankle joints while bending the client’s knee back to the point of slight resistance and then return leg flat to bed, as shown below. (Be gentle and slow) IMP do not move further than the point of resistance
  3. Repeat twice more.
  4. Cover the client’s leg

What are the steps for the ankle ROM exercises?

A
  1. Ask the client if you may begin the ankle ROM exercises
  2. Support the leg just slightly above the client’s ankle and with your other hand on the bottom of the foot. Push the foot forward toward the leg and in a separate motion, push the foot pointing downward then back upward, as shown in the below illustration. IMP Do not move further than the point of resistance.
  3. Repeat twice more
  4. Cover the client’s foot.
