Propellor, Fuel, and Electrical System Flashcards
Where are fuel tanks in training aircraft located?
Wings
Why are fuel caps vented?
To allow air to replace the fuel as it is used in the tanks
What is the purpose of the fuel vent under the wing?
To allow fuel to expand during warm weather
What is the purpose of the fuel drain valve?
To take samples checking for water, sediment, and proper octane of fuel
What color is 100 octane aviation fuel? What should be checked before every flight?
Blue / The color of the fuel to make sure the correct fuel is added to the plane
What color is jet fuel? What does it smell like?
Clear or straw colored, smells like kerosene
What is MOGAS?
A type of automobile gas used in certified gen aviation airplanes
How does fuel flow through the aircraft?
By gravity from the wing tanks, to the selector valve, into a reservoir tank, through the electric auxiliary fuel pump, then onward
What is the purpose of the electric fuel pump?
To prime the engine cylinders with fuel prior to starting the engine.
Where does fuel travel after the electric auxiliary fuel pump?
Fuel shutoff valve -> Fuel Strainer -> Engine-driven fuel pump -> Fuel air control unit
How is fuel flow determined on an aircraft?
It is measured at the fuel distribution valve
Where does fuel travel after the fuel air control unit?
Fuel distribution valve -> Fuel injector nozzle for each cylinder
Describe a propellor
A rotating airfoil that provides thrust to an aircraft much the same way a wing produces lift
Why is a propellor twisted?
So it can produce equal thrust from the hub to the tip
What is the purpose of the throttle?
To control the RPM of the engine, and thus the resulting thrust
