Four Fundamentals (Part 2) Flashcards
What is straight and level flight? How does a pilot verify straight and level flight?
(1)Constant heading and altitude.
(2)Through a reference point relative to the horizon as well as the wings relativity to the horizon
What instrument measures level flight for height?
Altimeter
What should be used to relieve pressure on the control/yoke?
Elevator trim
What other indicator should stay constant during straight and level flight?
Airspeed
In level flight, what should the vertical speed indicator show?
Zero
What will happen to the pitch if throttle is decreased? Increase?
The nose will descend. The nose will increase.
What are some indicators for straight flight?
Visual cues (highways, fences, etc.) and heading indicator
What are the instruments used for straight flight?
Attitude indicator, heading indicator, turn coordinator
How is trim used to maintain attitude?
First, use the control stick to set straight and level, then use the trim to maintain that position to “hands off”
What is a climb?
The combination of pitch and power which allows the airplane to gain altitude.
What two things need to be done for a climb?
Backpressure on elevator, set throttle to climb power
What needs to be done to counteract left yaw during the slower speed of a climb?
Apply right rudder
How is airspeed adjusted during climb?
By changing the pitch attitude
When should level off from a climb begin?
About 50 feet before the desired altitude
What is the “best glide speed”?
The speed at which the greatest forward travel is made for the altitude lost
