Introducing quotes
Should always be in quotation marks and be I treated in surrounding text.
Entire sentence after a partial sentence punctuation
Use a comma before the quote
Quote after a complete sentence punctuation
Use a colon before the quote
Partial quote within a sentence punctuation
Only use quotation marks
Block quotes punctuation
after a colon then set on a new line and indented without quotation marks.
*check style guide on block quote rules. 40+ words or 5+ lines
*capitalize first word of block quote if a complete sentence but if starts mid-sentence check style guide
Laten word sic
Short for sic eras scriptum
Meaning thus or thus it was written.
Use of sic in quotes
Enclosed in square brackets and not usually italicized.
Placed after the incorrect word or at end of sentence with multiple issues.
Ex/
Smith (2001) says, “I am very good at speling [sic].”

Square brackets use
Shows modification to original quote
• correct an error
• clarify something
• to fit surrounding text
• annotating quotations
• adding emphasis
*amended quote should always preserve the original meaning
Ellipses In quotes use in Academic writing
To show that part of a quote has been omitted.

Proofreading quotes
Take care!
• comment it seems incorrect and ask them to check
• a clear typo can be corrected and commented for them to check source
• if you can look up source easily, possibly correct it and leave comment but be careful! Could be translated.
