A
Pill containing only progesterone hormone
- E.g. Mini pill/cerezette
- 99% effectiveness

What is the mechanism of action of POP?
A
Increases cervical mucus
Thins endothelium
May prevent eggs being released

What advice is given about taking the POP?
A
HOW TO TAKE
- 1 tablet every day (no withdrawal period)
- Either a 3h or 12h window to take tablet depending on brand
HOW TO START
- Take on first day of period then no need for extra protection
- If not need to use barrier protection for 7 days
MISSED DOSE
- Take next dose asap
- Use barrier protection for 7 days
- If sex before this then need emergency contraception

What are the contraindications to the POP?
A
- Forgetfulness
- Breast cancer
- PHx ectopic pregnancy
- Undiagnosed PV bleed
- Liver disease

What are the side effects to the POP?
A
- Irregular periods*
- Hormonal: mode changes, acne, breast tenderness, headaches
- Increased risk of ectopic

What re the advantages to the POP?
A
Can use in COCP contraindications
-migraines, HTN, Hx thromboembolic event
Can use whilst breastfeeding
Can use at any age
Can reduce premenstrual symptoms and dysmenorrhia
