What is the injectable contraception?
A
Intramuscular injection
- Contains progesterone hormone
- Lasts 3 months

What is the MOA of the injection?
A
Inhibits ovulation
Increases cervical mucus
Thins endothelium

What are the contraindications for the injection?
A
- Liver/genital/breast cancer
- Liver disease
- Undiagnosed PV bleed
- Enzyme inducers: (antiepileptics, rifampicin, St John’s)

What are the side effects/disadvantages of the injection?
A
Weight gain*
Cannot remove until 3 months finished
May take >year for fertility to return
Hormonal side effects: breast tenderness, mood/libido changes, headaches
