What are IUSs?
A
Intrauterine system (IUS)
- Contains levonorgestrel (progesterone)
- > 99% effective
- Lasts 5 years
- Also used in management of menorrhagia
EG. MIRENA

What is the MOA of the IUS?
A
- Increases cervical mucus
- Thins endothelium
- May prevent ovulation

What are the contraindications for the IUS?
A
- Pelvic infection
- PID <3 months ago
- Gynae Cancer
- Small uterine cavity
- Undiagnosed PV bleed

What advice is given about the IUS?
A
-STI check before insertion

What are the side effects/risks of the IUS?
A
Coil insertion
- Bleeding
- Infection in first 3 weeks
- Perforation (1:1000)
Spotting for first 6 months then amenorrhoea

What are the advantages of the IUS?
A
- Good for forgetfulness
- Menorrhagia/Dysmenorrhoea treatment
- > 45 treats can stay in place until menopause
