What is an IUD?
A
Intrauterine device or a copper coil
- > 99% effective
- No hormones
- Small plastic device that sits in the womb
- Last for 10 years

What is the mechanism of action of the copper coil?
A
- Copper acts to decrease sperm motility and survival
- Thins endothelium
NB: DOES NOT work by causing abortions

What are the contraindications to the copper coil?
A
- Pelvic Infection
- PID <3 months ago
- Gynae cancer
- Small uterine cavity
- Undiagnosed PV bleed
- Copper allergy

What are the side effects/risk to IUD insertion?
A
Coil insertion risks
- Infection risk in first 3 weeks
- Perforation (1:1000)
- Expulsion
- Bleeding from insertion
Menorrhagia and dysmenorrhea ++

What advice is given for the copper coil?
A
- Must check monthly for string (risk of expulsion)
- Some partners can feel string
- Must have STI check before insertion
- > 40yrs can stay on copper coil until menopause

What are the advantages of IUD?
A
- Protected from day of insertion
- Good for forgetfulness
