What is the impact device?
A
Progesterone only releasing device
-99% effective
Size of hairpin inserted in arm under local anaesthetic

What is the MOA of the implant?
A
Prevents ovulation
Thickens cervical mucus
Thins endothelial lining preventing implantation

What advice is given about the implant?
A
- Will last three years
- Will be able to see under skin
- Insertion and removal may leave small scar
- Small risk of infection at insertion site

What are the contraindications to the implant?
A
- Liver/genital/breast cancer
- Liver disease
- Undiagnosed PV bleed
- Enzyme inducers - antiepileptics, rifampicin

What are the side effects to the implant?
A
Hormonal side effects: mood changes, headaches, GI effects, ?weight gain
May have continual bleeding*
Breast tenderness
Can feel it

What are the advantages of the implant?
A
- Good for forgetfulness
- Doesn’t contain oestrogen so can be used for contraindication for COCP & thromboembolic events
- Can be inserted immediately following termination of pregnancy

What are the disadvantages of the implant?
A
Irregular periods may mean bleeding for 3-6 months
