What is Amalgam?
- A silver filling used to fill cavities
- Not as popular as it once was because dentist now use teeth colored materials to fill cavities and restore teeth
- Mostly composed of mercury
What is a dental composite used for?
- They are used to restore tooth structure lost through trauma, caries, or other diseases
- Can also be used as a cement to cement crowns and veneers etc.
What is a basic dental composite made up of?
Synthetic materials that combine polymeric matrix with a dispersion of glass, mineral , or resin filler particles
What two ways can a composite be cured?
- Self-cured
- Light-cured
What is dental impression material used for?
Used for creating a mold of the patient’s mouth
What procedure does an impression usually have to be taken for?
Implants and dentures
What is dental adhesive/ bonding agents use for?
bonding materials used to keep things in place
What are cements?
Materials that retain restoration or appliances in a fixed position in the mouth
What is a base?
A restorative filling material used either alone or with other materials
What is a liner?
Material that are placed as a thin coating on the surface of cavity preparation.
What is varnish?
A varnish is defined as a natural gum (resin) dissolved in an organic solvent such as acetone or chloroform
What is a varnish used for?
Used on teeth to seal dentinal tubules, thus reducing the effects of micro-leakage
What are some examples of finishing and polishing products?
- Abrasives
- Cut off wheels
- Discs
- Flexible polishers
- Reciprocating systems
- Polishing pastes
What is a crown
A dental restoration which completely caps or encircles a tooth or a dental implant
What is a bridge
made up of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap and a false tooth/teeth in between
