Procedure Turns Flashcards
What is a procedure turn?
•Expected to be executed when depicted in the plan view.
•May reverse course any way you desire as long as…
•Same side of approach course as symbol.
•Completed within the distance specified (if given)
•Remain in protected airspace.
When are you required to do a procedure turn?
•If a holding or teardrop pattern is depicted, that is the only course reversal method allowed.
•When the holding pattern is specified:
•Pattern distance or time must be flown as indicated in the profile view
•Pattern direction must be flown as depicted
•The pilot should select the proper method for entry based on course of arrival at the fix (teardrop, parallel, direct)
•Holding pattern maneuver is complete when established on the inbound course
•No additional turns are required or authorized
When are you not required to do a procedure turn?
•No course reversals are required nor authorized when:
•ATC has cleared you for a straight-in approach
•While being radar vectored to an approach
•Course indicated on plate as NoPT
•No course reversal is shown on plate
Straight in approach
An instrument approach where the final approach is begun without first executing the procedure turn, not necessarily completed with a straight-in landing or to straight-in landing minimums.
Straight in landing
A landing made on a runway that is aligned within 30° of the final approach course following completion of that instrument approach.
