Instrument Procedures FARS Flashcards
Ceiling definition
Height above the earth’s surface of the lowest layer of clouds or obscuring phenomena that is reported as “broken”, “overcast”, or “obscuration”.
Ground visibility
Is visibility as measured on the ground by a transmissometer or a trained observer. It’s reported to pilots via METARs and other weather reports.
Flight visibility
Is defined as the average forward horizontal distance, from the cockpit, at which prominent unlighted objects may be seen and identified. More simply, it is how far we can see.
IFR conditions
•IFR: Ceilings less than 1,000’ / Visibility less than 3 SM
•MVFR: Ceilings 1,000 - 3,000’ / Visibility 3-5 SM
Decision height
•Height at which a decision must be made to continue or execute missed approach.
•Applies to precision approaches
•Read in AGL
Decision altitude
•Altitude at which a decision must be made to continue or execute missed approach.
•Applies to precision approaches
•Read in MSL right off the altimeter
ILS categories
•Category I
•200’ DH, RVR 2400
•Category II
•100’ DH, RVR 1200
•Category III
•DH less than 100’, RVR less than 1200
Minimum Descent Altitude (MDA)
•Minimum altitude when a decision must be made to continue or execute missed approach.
•Applies to non-precision approaches
•Read in MSL
In order to continue below MDA or DA/DH to land…
1.Aircraft is continually in a position from which a landing can be made on the intended runway using normal descent and normal maneuvers
2.Flight visibility is not less than that required for the IAP
3.One of the required visual references must be visible and identifiable by the pilot (Continued on next slide)
Approved IFR visual references
•The approach light system; BUT you can not descend below 100ft above touch down zone elevation unless the red terminating bars or the red side row bars are also distinctly visible and identifiable. (ALSF-1 &2)
•The threshold.
•The threshold markings.
•The threshold lights.
•The runway end identifier lights. (the flashing strobes on the corners)
•The visual glideslope indicator. (both VASI and PAPI)
•The touchdown zone or touchdown zone markings.
•The touchdown zone lights.
•The runway or runway markings.
•The runway lights.
GRABCARD
•Generator (or alternator)
•Rate of Turn Indicator
•Sensitive Altimeter
•Ball (Skid/Slip indicator)
•Clock (part of the airplane)
•Attitude Indicator
•Radios
•DG (or equivalent)
