Problem 1 Social Cognition Flashcards
Social Psychology
How human thought feelings behaviour is influenced by/ has influence on other people
Social Cognition
Cognitive processes and structure that influence/ are influenced by social behaviour
Configural model
Central traits: considered important information (warm/cold)
Peripheral traits: less important (polite/blunt)
Primacy
Earlier information has higher impact on social cognition.
Physical appearance has a high impact = primary effect
Schema
cognitive structure that represents knowledge about a concept of stimulus
Influences the encoding and interpretation of new information
theory driven cognition
more accurate schemas are needed (high costs if wrong)
data driven cognition
(more complex) individual differences influence if people think more deeply or on autopilot
Associative Network
Ideas are connected by associative links e.g. girl with ponytail, increases strength by repetition
Prototype
representation of the ideal features of a category
Regression
Individual stimuli are often overrated e.g. first time in a restaurant is amazing second time is only okay etc
Base-rate information
Statistical information which are often ignored because they are not aware of the importance
Covariation
How strong are two things related, correlated variation of two or more variables
Illusory correlation
people tend to search for schema consistent information only. assume correlation even if there is none
Heuristic
Cognitive short cuts that provide accurate inferences. Used for complex problem solving
The actor-observer- effect
The tendency to attribute our own behavior externally and others internally
