Pressure, Volume, Flow, and Resistance Flashcards
Why does blood flow?
Blood flows because liquids move from high to low pressure regions
What is a pressure gradient? (delta P)
difference in pressure between 2 regions
How does blood flow out of the heart?
Blood flows out of the heart (highest pressure) into closed loop of vessels (lower pressure)
What happens to pressure with distance?
It decreases and pressure is lost due to friction as blood flows through vessels
What causes pressure to become lost
due to friction
What is hydrostatic pressure?
Pressure exerted by a fluid not in motion. Extends in all directions
Pressure Changes in Liquids Without a Change in
volume
What does contraction of the heart create?
Contraction of heart creates pressure without changing volume of blood
- Blood leaves heart to vessels, called driving pressure
What is driving pressure?
When blood leaves heart to vessels
What happens wehen blood vessels dilate?
Blood pressure decreases
What happens when blood vessels constrict?
Blood pressure increases
What affects blood pressure in the cardiovascular system?
Volume
