Cardiac Flashcards
What happens in the first phase of the cardiac cycle?
The heart at rest: atrial and ventricular diastole
The atria are filling with blood from the vein
AV valves open —>ventricles fill
Passive filling
Passive filling occurs during
atrial diastole, ventricular diastole(late diastole phase in it)
Ventricular distaole- late diastole
both sets of chambers are relaxed and ventricle fill passively
atrial systole
The second phase of the cardiac cycle-
atrial contraction forces a small amount of additional blood into the ventricles (last 20%)
Isovolumetric contraction
1st phase of ventricular contractionpushes AV valves closed but does not create enough pressure to open semilunar valves. Maximum blood volume in vetricles= EDV
as ventriculer pressure rises and excees pressure in the arteries, the semilunar valves open and blood is ejcted
Ventriular ejection
Isovolumic ventricular relaxation
as ventricles relax, pressure falls,. Blood flows back into cusps of semilunar valaves and snaps them closed. Minimum blood volume in ventricles = end systolic volume
