Summarise Hull House, 5 W’s.

Hull House
Who: established by Jane Adams with Ellen Gates Starr in a pressure group. Addams contributed to the NAACP, Consumers’ League, and Women’s Trade Union.
What: Hull House was a social centre for immigrant families to address social issues. It offered nurseries, English lessons for Italians, and classes for parents. Short breaks provided for elderly in the Poorhouse and boarding for factory girls.
When: Established in 1889. By 1895 50 settlement houses made.
Where: Chicago.
Why: After touring Europe and seeing Toynbee Hall in London, Addams and Starr were impressed and attempted to pressure government into improving housing in the city. Data on Slum conditions published.

A problem with Hull House was its failure to give immigrants political power and bridge the gap between the rich and the poor.
