Preparticipation Screening & CVD Risk Factors Exam 1 Flashcards
What are the two types of screening?
Self-Guided & Professionally Guided
What does ACSM Screening Algorithm focus on?
-Current Physical Activity Level
-Desired Physical Activity Level
-Diagnosed Cardiovascular, Metabolic, or Renal Disease
-Signs & Symptoms of Cardiovascular, Metabolic, or Renal Disease
Is medical clearance required for the ACSM Screening Algorithm?
No, only a recommendation
What is the “Rule of 3” ?
At least 30 min of moderate intensity PA that is structured at least 3 days a week for at least 3 months
ACSM Screening Algorithm Steps
-Step 1: Determine physical activity using “Rule of 3”
-Step 2: Determine if individual has known CV, Renal, or Metabolic Disease
-Step 3: Determine if individual has any signs/symptoms of disease
-Step 4: Determine intensity individual wishes to participate in
Signs & Symptoms of CV, Metabolic, or Renal Disease
-Chest, Jaw, Arms pain/discomfort
-Dyspnea(Shortness of breath)
-Syncope(Dizziness)
-Orthopnea
-Ankle edema
-Palpitations or tachycardia
-Intermittent Claudication
-Known Heart Murmur
-Unusual fatigue in typical activities
Is this statement true or false: If multiple criteria, only need 1 to be considered a risk factor in the Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors
True
Positive vs Negative Risk Factor
-Positive=increases risk for future CVD
-Negative=decreases risk for future CVD
True or False: Risk for CVD decreases with age
False, increases with age
How much genetic variation do 1st degree relatives share?
About 50%
Negative Results of Cigarette Smoking
-Risk for stroke 2-4x higher
-Contributing factor in 1/3 of coronary heart disease deaths
-Decreases life expectancy by about 10 years
What is physical inactivity based on in Preparticipation Screening?
Total moderate-to-vigorous activity per week(minutes)
Is the cutoff the same for both genders in Body Mass Index?
Yes
Is the cutoff the same for both genders in Waist Circumference?
No
What is the “normal” blood pressure?
Below 120/80 mmHg
