Assessing Cardiorespiratory Fitness Exam 1 Flashcards
What is Cardiorespiratory Fitness?
Ability to perform large muscle, dynamic exercise of moderate to vigorous intensity for prolonged periods of time
Health Related Components of Physical Fitness
-Increased CRF=decreased risk for all mortallity & disease
-Increased CRF=increased levels of physical activity
What is the measurement of Cardiorespiratory Fitness?
Maximal Oxygen Consumption(VO2Max)
What factors influence VO2max?
-Mode of exercise
-Genetics
-State of Training
-Body Size & Composition
-Sex
-Age
Ways to Assess CRF
-Measurement(indirect calorimetry)
-Estimate/Predict(lab-based, field, step tests)
Modes of Testing for VO2max
-Treadmill
-Cycle Ergometer
-Field Tests
-Step Tests
1.5-Mile Run/Walk Test
Complete as fast as possible
Cooper 12-Minute Test
Run/walk as far as possible during time
Rockport 1-Mile Fitness Walking Test
-Walk 1 mile as fast as possible
-Measure HR directly after test
Queens College/McArdle Step Test Protocol
-3 minute test
-16.25 inch step height
-Take radial HR within 5 seconds of end of test
Test Termination Criteria
-Angina symptoms
-Excessive rise in BP
-Shortness of breath
-10mmHg drop in SBP
-Poor perfusion
-HR doesn’t increase with intensity
-Noticeable change in heart rhythm
-Request to stop by participant
-Severe fatigue
-Failure of testing equipment
Submaximal Lab Testing
-Doesn’t reach physiologic maximum
-Estimation of VO2max from HR measurements
-Predetermined test endpoint at by protocol (85% of APMHR & HR in range)
Bruce Protocol
-Multi-stage Test
-85% APMHR is achieved
-Cool-down
-Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, RPE, & Termination Criteria measurements
Metabolic Equivalents
1 MET = 3.5ml/kg/min
Astrand Cycle Test
-6 minute single stage test
-Pedal at 50 RPM based on sex & estimated fitness level
