Practical on Body Composition Exam 1 Flashcards
During a circumference measurement what is the anatomical position of the subject?
-Standing with feet together
-Relaxed
Can the subject hold the tape during a circumference measurement?
Only to hold in place but not while measurement is being recorded
Where should a circumference measurement be performed?
On the side of the subject
Where is the waist circumference measured?
Smallest area between umbilicus & xiphoid process
Where is the hip circumference measured?
The largest around the hips/buttocks
How many sites did we discuss for skinfold measurements?
7
What side of the body are measurements taken on for skinfold?
Right side
What is the proper hand technique to perform skinfold measurements?
-Pinch with left hand in C grip pinky to the sky
-2-3 in. between pinching finger
-Caliper in right hand placed 1cm below pinching fingers
-Caliper is held for 2sec for measurement
Is the pinch or the caliper released first in a skinfold measurement?
The Caliper
What are the 7 skinfold sites?
-Abdominal
-Triceps
-Chest
-Midaxillary
-Subscapular
-Suprailiac
-Thigh
Abdominal Site
-Vertical fold
-2cm to the right side of the umbilicus
-Tape measure needed to locate
-Can give a little more wiggle room so measurement isn’t taken in belly button
Triceps Site
-Vertical Fold
-In the posterior midline of the upper arm
-Halfway between acromion & olecranon processes
-Tape measure needed to locate
Chest Site
-Diagonal Fold
-Located between anterior axillary line and nipple
-Male 1/2 between sites & Female 1/3 between sites
Midaxillary Site
-Vertical Fold
-Located in the intersection of the Midaxillary Line(vertical) & Xiphoid Process(horizontal)
Subscapular Site
-Diagonal Fold
-1-2cm below the inferior angle of the scapula
-Bend subject’s arm back into chicken wing position and then relax subject’s arm to take measurement
